Emulated PS2 games are coming to PlayStation 4, Sony has confirmed to Wired.
“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” a Sony representative told Wired via e-mail. “We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”
When asked specifically whether that means disc-based PS2 emulation will also be supported, Sony would not comment.
Earlier today, we ran a story revealing that the PlayStation 4 “versions” of Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter—which are included with the Star Wars PlayStation 4 hardware bundle—all run via a PS2 emulator that supports trophies and upscales the game’s textures and frame rate.
Back in September, the Pan European Game Information board rated PS2 titles Ape Escape 2, Dark Cloud 2, and Twisted Metal: Black for release on PlayStation 4.
PlayStation Experience, Sony’s annual PlayStation event, runs from December 5 to 6 in San Francisco. It’s possible we’ll hear more about emulation there.

Sony sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4s as of Dec. 28
Andrew House, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment, said at CES today. Microsoft announced yesterday it had sold 3 million Xbox Ones in 2013.
Microsoft confirmed its Xbox One console has sold over three million units since release in November.
Additionally, PS4 software is performing well with some 9.7 million units sold since the console launched. while PS Plus subscriptions had leapt 90% since the machine released.
